Is There a Particular Case Result of Yours That You’re Especially Proud Of? – Mathew Feller
Video Description
We recently had a facility death case out of the state of Idaho. And in that case, we had an individual that needed at-home health care, right. His family and caregivers had to go to work; they couldn’t care for them while they were away, so they hired a company that was going to come in and provide at-home health care. And they promised that the employees that would come in and deliver that at-home health care would be qualified employees, trained employees, supervised employees. Well, they hired a guy that had no training whatsoever. They put him through the caregiver challenge test, which is a test that’s required; it’s the instrument that says you’re qualified to be an at-home caregiver. He takes the caregiver challenge test, and they pass him on the caregiver challenge test when in actuality, he failed the caregiver challenge test. And they placed him in this home and without any additional trainings, without any supervision whatsoever, and one day our client needs, you know, shower and so the caregiver, the unqualified caregiver, goes up fills the bathtub with water and places our client in the tub. And the tub is boiling hot. In fact, it’s so hot that our client suffers second, third degree burns over 33% of his body. And as a result, you know, suffers organ failure and dies. We ended up with a very good result on that case. Our work isn’t just about the event at Feller & Wendt, LLC™; you know how to take care of the people that come to us in need, but it’s also about effectuating change. I believe that the work that we did on that case effectuated change, right. We’ve got new standards, we’ve got new policies, and procedures for facilities like this to ensure that what they promise, what state law mandates, minimum standards, that those things are met. And so I, I would say that that Idaho facility death case is recent but it’s definitely at the top of the list on effectuating change and therefore at the top my list on what I’m proud of.
